Elementary School Science

District-Based Hybrid Courses

Elementary School Science courses are available to be delivered to districts on-site, in a 15 student minimum, cohort model. Districts are encouraged to work together, if needed, to achieve the minimum student enrollment required to offer the program on-site. Participants can be assured that these courses have been designed to fully align with the new Massachusetts Science Standards for 2015. Courses include:

Elementary Science and Engineering Technology  (ELE 653A) - 3 credits

This course introduces teachers at the elementary level to the newly drafted revisions of the Massachusetts Science, Technology, and Engineering standards along with the instructional tools and strategies required to effectively advance learner achievement specific to the new performance expectations.  The course includes both early childhood and elementary science practices and content designed to strengthen scientific literacy among learners as they explore and use key knowledge specific to earth, life, physical and engineering sciences. The course is offered in a hybrid format that features both online learning and interactive, face-to-face instruction. 

Differentiating Elementary Mathematics and Science for Classrooms with Mixed Ability and English Language Learners: Practical Applications for Today’s Elementary Teachers - 4 credits

This course is offered in an integrated format that includes four modules tailored specifically for teachers at the elementary school level.  The four modules highlight Science, Math, Special Education, and ESL.  The course is provided as professional development designed to increase teachers’ pedagogical understanding and classroom application in the teaching and learning of mathematics and science content to students of mixed learning ability and/ or who are English language learners.  Modules are co-taught by campus faculty from the School of Education’s math, science, special education, and ESL departments—all of whom are seasoned practitioners in P-12 working with teacher education.
